Fire System Testing Requirements

After the installer has made the initial installation (installed the remote pull, hooked up agent tanks and detection etc.), the electrician and alarm companies need to make their hook-ups to the fire suppression switch. Alarms need to activate when the fire system trips, exhaust fans need to stay on, supply fans shut down, and fuel supplies to the cooking equipment need to be cut off

Once this is complete, the local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) does his inspection and witnesses the fire system activation to make sure all the above items happen. Once the AHJ is satisfied the certificate of occupancy (CO) is issued and the restaurant can open.

Different types of tests can be required by the AHJ, the most usual being a puff test where an air cylinder is expelled through the system and the nozzles are checked to make sure air “puffs” from them. The tanks are then loaded and charged and the system is ready for operation.

Some jurisdictions require a full dump test* where actual agent is dumped through the nozzles. This is a lengthy procedure and will require clean up and recharging of the system once the test is complete

*This is not covered by Accurex.
